YESTERDAY...
From origins in the 1890's to the discovery of the Gunn effect in GaAs in 1963, millimeter-wave technologies reached few field applications. The cost of early components and the often short life time of sources limited system effectiveness and economic feasibility. The discovery of the Gunn effect marked the beginning of the age of reliable solid state millimeter wave sources. Innovations were needed to develop and take full advantage of technological advances.
TODAY...
Innovations in material, device and circuit technology have yielded reliable and cost effective technologies suitable for both laboratory and field applications. ZAX Millimeter Wave Corporation was formed in 1984 to foster innovations in key areas of millimeter wave technology. With design, manufacturing and testing facilities located in southern California, ZAX has the capabilities to efficiently advance component and system technologies. Antenna technology has been strengthened by improved manufacturing and design techniques. Frequency convertors, aided by advances in semiconductor technology provide state-of-the-art performance. Gunn oscillators now incorporate Indium Phosphide (InP) devices to provide more power with higher efficiencies than Galium Arsenide (GaAs). High reliability with moderate cost facilitates application of millimeter wave technologies in radio astronomy, radiometry, radar, remote sensing, communication, and various other EW/ELINT applications.
